Teacher Certification
Information for Students
The teacher certification program includes an intensive, sequenced, three-term program of professional study. Students typically begin the program during their junior year after demonstrating sufficient academic preparation. Each semester the students participate in academic and professional coursework while working in an area K-12 classroom. These experiences are sequential across semesters, expanding what has been previously learned. Upon successful completion of the program, students are recommended to the State of Michigan for teacher certification.
Students who wish to apply for the Bachelor of Music with Certification program and the Teacher Education program begin obtaining their work experience during freshman year. Outlined below is a summary of the Teacher Certification program:
Freshman year: Obtain work experience documentation
Sophomore year: Applying for the Teacher Certification program is organized annually. Students submit the application (available online) and all other related paperwork to the Music Education Office.
Junior year: Upon obtaining acceptance into the Teacher Certification program students begin their preparation for student teaching and necessary paperwork for recommendation by the School of Education for the teacher certification license by the State of Michigan Department of Education.
Senior year: Student teachers are in their final phase of the Teaching Certification program. Student teaching may be taken either in the Fall or Winter Semesters. Student teaching placement is determined by a joint effort between the music education faculty, the student, the cooperating teacher, and the student teaching program director in the School of Education. The student teaching program includes one semester working full time with a cooperating teacher. Upon successful completion of this teaching experience and the required paperwork by the State of Michigan, students are eligible to apply for a K - 12 Michigan Teacher’s Certificate.
Information for Cooperating Teachers and Supervisors
Cooperating Teachers: The University of Michigan, School of Music, Theatre & Dance works in cooperation with public school teachers in the Southeast Michigan area. Students meet with their music education faculty advisors and cooperating teachers to ensure the needs of student and cooperating teachers are met. Planning generally takes place up to a year prior to the semester of registering for the course.
Supervisors: University Supervisors represent the University’s teacher certification programs and thus guide the student teacher, in conjunction with the cooperating teacher. The Music Education Supervisor observes, advises, and confers with both the student teacher and the cooperating teacher.
